Cape Town’s World-Renowned College of Magic Opens Its Doors to the Next Generation of Young Performers on Saturday, 25 July.
For more than 46 years, the College of Magic has quietly transformed the lives of thousands of young South Africans, using the art of magic as a powerful educational tool to build confidence, communication skills, resilience and leadership.
Its graduates have gone on to become professional performers, educators, entrepreneurs and leaders in a wide range of fields. Others have discovered something equally valuable: the confidence to stand in front of a classroom, speak in public or simply believe in themselves.
The mid-year Open Day offers families a rare opportunity to explore the College’s historic Victorian home in Claremont, meet its instructors, experience a live lesson and discover how learning magic develops skills that extend far beyond the stage.
“We’re not simply teaching children how to perform tricks,” says Chad Findlay, Creative Director of the College of Magic. “Magic becomes the vehicle for developing creativity, discipline, problem solving, teamwork and self-confidence. Watching a shy child gradually find their voice and eventually perform in front of hundreds of people is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.”
The College’s unique approach has earned international recognition, with features on CNN, BBC, CBS 60 Minutes, The New York Times and David Blaine’s Do Not Attempt on Disney+. Despite its global reputation, its focus remains firmly on creating opportunities for young people in Cape Town, many of whom attend through bursary support.
Children joining the programme become part of a structured six-year journey that combines magic with juggling, theatre, mime, public speaking and performance. Students regularly perform at public shows, community events and major theatres, including Artscape, while learning skills that serve them throughout their lives.
The Open Day is aimed at children aged 10 to 13 and their families.
